The Tech Crisis No One is Talking About
Detroit’s tech industry is booming, but what about the crisis no one is talking about?  There will be 1 million unfilled computer programming positions by 2020, and according to the Department of Labor less than 10% of software engineers are African-American. These speakers will highlight the overarching need for developers, companies’ dire need to diversify to remain competitive and what Detroit is doing to help fill those gaps.

Detroiters will get a behind-the-scenes perspective on what organizations and the city are doing to counter this challenge, helping them remain competitive and get ahead of the curve. With new programs being established throughout the city, Detroit entrepreneurs need to know more about the opportunities at the fingertips and an understanding of how to leverage them.

10 Commandments of Networking
The 10 basic commandments of networking...with a humorous take on things, but very serious.

This presentation has been done for dozens of MEDC classes and events, and hammers home the importance of networking...and doing it right.

If Mel Brooks can use the Ten Commandments to completely crack me up every time I watch his film, then surely I can use them to help those asking “What’s networking?”

(it’s when a bunch of people get together with a common purpose…and, I know…don’t call you “Shirley”)

And then, since we gave you the10 Commandments of Networking, it seemed only natural that we should also tell you what the Seven Deadly Sins of Networking are in order to round out the equation.

Bob and Dave from IT in the D have been running networking events for the metro Detroit infromation technology community since 2001, written hundreds of blog entries about networking ranging from "Don't Be That Guy" to "How Not To Suck At...", "The Dating Corollary" about the similarites between job search, dating, and your career...and more.  They host two casual networking events every month (first Tuesday in Ann Arbor and third Thursday in Metro Detroit), and are continually amazed that anyone actually listens to their podcast, which has evolved into an actual business with more than 80 shows running out of their 5 studios in buildings in Royal Oak and downtown Detroit.

"Insure" Your Success with Risk Management

As entrepreneurs we know that you embrace risk. You take risks every day to start and grow your business. But how do you know you're being strategic and careful on your journey to protect and grow your business? We'll have speakers review the side of risk you're not always thinking about: insurance and risk management. From this event you will learn how to make sure you're protected in order to continue to do what you love.

This discussion will share ways to help you manage and improve cash flow by becoming aware of and monitoring risks that can disrupt cash flow. We will first discuss the similarities and differences between risk management and insurance programs, and then discuss some of the most impactful exposures facing entrepreneurs today:

  • Cyber (Does you business operate on the web in any capacity?)
  • Property (Do you currently (or plant to) own, operate, or lease space for a brick and mortar operation?)
  • Business Income (What will you do if you can't sell your product or meet order obligations for a specified period of time?)

We will review what to do and how to potentially avoid some situations to mitigate these risks altogether. This will be great for you at any level in your business, from start-up to scaling!

The Dumb Shit We Do Makes the Best Compost for What We Grow
This is one part panel, one part open mic, one part ritual sacrifice, one part absolution, one-part hands-on gardening. I've come to believe that shame--imagined or real, anticipated or experienced--is the greatest threat to our entrepreneurial (and personal) journeys. Entrepreneurs are human beings. We do some dumb shit. Not well-meaning shit, just plain dumb (although we may not see it at the time). When we allow shame to control us, we wallow alone. We don't face facts and reality in a way that allows us to grow smarter and wiser. We suffer in silence. We eventually give up. Ah, but the secret is this: Dumb shit makes great compost if we can let go of our shame and see the value in ourselves and what we do. In this program, we'll hear from a few entrepreneurs who will share their "dumb shit." Each participant will have a chance to share her or his own stories. Finally, every person will write down their "dumb shit" that they're holding onto. We'll shred it and add it compost that participants will add to potted plants they'll take home (to remind them of the lesson).

Who doesn't have some dumb shit they'd like to compost for growth? Who doesn't want to discover they're not the only one who makes bad decisions? Who doesn't want to know what it feels like to be free and facing forward again with a community of support? Shame (and self-isolation) is not A challenge for entrepreneurs, it is THE challenge for entrepreneurs. This session doesn't just give participants a method or tool, it gives them freedom and refreshment.

Crypto-Startup: The New Frontier
"It took 7 years for the value of all cryptocurrency to hit $10 BILLION, another year to hit $20 BILLION, only 3 more months to hit $40 BILLION"[1], and today it's over $50 Billion . . . But if you’re still measuring what’s happening in terms of dollars, you’re missing the point. I believe we’re witnessing a revolution in slow motion on par with the most important human history.

Bitcoin is a new type of startup and after it, the game will never be the same.

What is money? Where does it come from?
What’s wrong with our current monetary system?
Why is the current monetary system toast?
What is Bitcoin?
What is the Blockchain?
What is a cryptostartup?
Why will the game never be the same?
How can you start a cryptostartup?
How do you fund a cryptostartup?

(I will also be revealing alchemical secret to creating money ex nihilo, you know, if you’re into that sort of thing . . . ;)

Supporting the Intrapreneur: Be Your Own Boss and Have One Too
The stereotype of an entrepreneur is a millennial working out of their house or coffee shop. But more and more, corporations and the business community have begun to support and take interest in growing entrepreneurial spirit within their own workforce. With perspectives from corporate leaders, entrepreneurs turned CEOs, and intrapreneurs, this session is hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber and will explore the growing support for intrapreneurship among corporations. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from a panel discussion and network with both leaders in the business community and fellow entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to see how others have been successful implementing their ideas through an existing company or organization. A portion of this session will be dedicated to audience discussion and networking so entrepreneurs will also get to strengthen relationships with members of the traditional business community who are interested in supporting entrepreneurial spirit in their institution.

This session will have speakers from a variety of industries to illustrate the needs, challenges, and opportunities entrepreneurs can have in more traditional organizations. This cross section of speakers will enable members of the traditional business audience to think about entrepreneurs in their companies as an asset and to learn from managers/execs who have successfully fostered entrepreneurial spirit in their employees and have seen impactful results.

Diversity in Tech: Localizing the National Conversation
Detroit’s population is more than 85% people of color and Latinx. But how diverse are its major corporations and growing startups? The lack of diversity can have a serious impact on our city’s residents, economy and opportunities. Learn more about how companies are becoming more inclusive, the importance of diversifying tech - for both small and large companies, and what you can do to jumpstart the conversation in your own business. Attendees will leave this session with actionable takeaways that can be immediately implemented into their own diversity strategies, and will have the opportunity to ask our panelists questions.

Detroit’s tech scene is booming but at times lacks in equal opportunities for people of color. We’ll have a candid conversation with some of the industry’s thought leaders to hear what they’re doing to ensure everyone has the opportunity and access to a career in tech, capital for their business, and connections to hire the right tech to grow their teams.

Speakers: Javier Evelyn (Alerje, CODE2040 Entrepreneur in Residence at Grand Circus), Trina Scott (Quicken Loans Director of Diversity and Inclusion) , Marlin Williams (Diversity and Inclusion Entrepreneur in Residence at Tech Town), Jamie Tomasello (DUO Security, Trust and Compliance Department Manager)

PR Minus the BS: How to Get Your Startup Press Coverage
There’s a lot of BS in PR, but it’s not all BS.

A good PR strategy helps spread the word about your business, builds meaningful relationships with reporters, increases sales and drives the bottomline; a bad one pisses off reporters, delivers no ROI and makes it harder for the good PR people to do their jobs.

During this interactive panel and happy hour, explore the “No BS” approach to PR. Moderated by Howie Barokas (Barokas PR), you'll hear from Matt Burns (TechCrunch), Chad Livengood (Crain’s Detroit Business) and Adrienne Roberts (Wall Street Journal) as they discuss what you need to know to get your startup press coverage, what NOT to do in PR and what reporters look for when assessing a company/product/idea for coverage in the age of clickbait.

For entrepreneurs looking to hack PR or hire an agency, this session will provide tips on getting your startup covered by press, along with how to build / what to look for in a good PR strategy.

Build a Company Around Open Source Software
Open Source Software is software that’s built by a community of software developers with the core principle of developing the software in the open so that anyone can inspect, modify and enhance the software.  There are  hundreds of Open Source Software projects.  You don’t have to be a coder to contribute.  Open Source Software needs documentation writers, people that can answer support questions and evangelist , which can help build a strong and healthy community around a project.  Many of the popular Open Source Software projects sell support or has a version of their software that they sell to companies.  However, many companies self-support and don’t purchase support because they don’t see value in paying an annual support fee and in many cases, they feel that they shouldn’t have to pay for support since the software is free.

This is an opportunity for you to build a business on providing on-demand support, consulting and/or build features that the community isn’t focused on developing.  In this session, we will walk thru the process of selecting an Open Source Software project to support, building a support and consulting practice and how to gain credibility and techniques for giving back to the Open Source Community that you would be generating money from.

Fashionology & Beyond
A program focused on the current industry and future opportunities of Fashion & Technology merging together worldwide.

Detroit entrepreneurs in the tech industry benefit by exploring this multi million dollar fashion industry and jump ahead on it by creating current and future tools and innovations that current startups and large retailers are missing and looking for. This also benefits the fashion industry by driving more startups and large fashion brands to Detroit to find all the tools in one place, continuing to establish Detroit as a fashion tech hub.

LAND GRAB - Documentary Film Screening and Discussion on Filmmaking in Detroit
LAND GRAB is a feature documentary film about the creation of the Hantz Woodlands on Detroit's east side, which was shot by Michigan natives who recently moved back to the area from LA. The story was filmed almost entirely within the city of Detroit, aside from a few establishing shots, and premiered in the city in 2016 at the Freep Film Festival.

Land Grab was the impetus for the creation of Atlas Industries, which is a production house based in Southfield, MI. A good portion of the team who filmed LAND GRAB now makes up Atlas Industries, which was launched shortly after filming wrapped.

Atlas Industries is a startup, and as such has valuable experience to offer to Detroiters interested in heading down the path of entering the film industry. We hope the discussion following the screening of the film will be informative from both a filmmaker's perspective as well as from a business viewpoint.

Without film incentives, getting into the industry in Michigan can seem daunting. We are a model for being able to launch a successful business in the Detroit area because we can create great work here, but also because we connect with the film industry in other parts of the country to stay relevant and keep business coming through the door. Being able to speak to the value of a national network that, because of our positioning, views Detroit as a formidable content creation space, is sure to spur thought and questions among entrepreneurs focused on entering the media content creation space.

Speakers: Sean O'Grady, Director and Producer of LAND GRAB and CEO of Atlas Industries
