Are the Children Still our Future?: A Look at Youth Food Entrepreneurship in Detroit
We will talk about engaging the youth of Detroit in the Entrepreneurship conversation. We will talk about the challenges youth face, how they can overcome these challenges and what the future can look like. I will lead the main talk and we will have a panel of 4 students that will be available for a question and answer session.

Detroit Food Academy is a food based program, our youth are taught basic culinary art skills and our Advanced students have an even higher skill set that goes beyond basic cooking.
Our youth are trained in Management level Serv-Safe and some have been cooking and learning the ins and out of entrepreneurship with our program for 4 years.
Detroit entrepreneurs can benefit from this conversation two-fold.

First, our students can shadow their businesses and gain some valuable insight into what it means to own their own business. Secondly, other food entrepreneurs that employ or offer mentor-ship to our youth can have solidly trained employees while the students work on their own goals or attend college in the city.

The food industry in Detroit is alive and doing quite well. The students in our program are a guarantee that it will continue to thrive. It is also a guarantee that the student population that we serve will have a seat at the table.

"Insure" Your Success with Risk Management

As entrepreneurs we know that you embrace risk. You take risks every day to start and grow your business. But how do you know you're being strategic and careful on your journey to protect and grow your business? We'll have speakers review the side of risk you're not always thinking about: insurance and risk management. From this event you will learn how to make sure you're protected in order to continue to do what you love.

This discussion will share ways to help you manage and improve cash flow by becoming aware of and monitoring risks that can disrupt cash flow. We will first discuss the similarities and differences between risk management and insurance programs, and then discuss some of the most impactful exposures facing entrepreneurs today:

  • Cyber (Does you business operate on the web in any capacity?)
  • Property (Do you currently (or plant to) own, operate, or lease space for a brick and mortar operation?)
  • Business Income (What will you do if you can't sell your product or meet order obligations for a specified period of time?)

We will review what to do and how to potentially avoid some situations to mitigate these risks altogether. This will be great for you at any level in your business, from start-up to scaling!
